Top Ten Tuesday | August 4: Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read

T10T

Hello everyone! It’s that time of the week again! Top Ten Tuesday is a book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Basically, you get a different bookish topic every Tuesday, and you comprise a list of ten (or however many you’re able to list) relating to said topic.

Today’s topic is: ‘Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read/Want To Read’ (or you could do fairytales I want to be retold or fairytales I love)

I’m not going to be including only fairytales. I’m including any well-known stories that have been reimagined and retold.

Read:

1. The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn #1) by Renée Ahdieh

wrath

This book is amazing. It’s a reimagining of an Arabian Nights’ tale, and it’s done beautifully, scrumptiously. Here’s my full review.

2. A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns & Roses) by Sarah J. Maas

acotar

A reimagined Beauty & the Beast. Often, the ‘beast’ from B&B retellings is portrayed as abusive and/or controlling – hence, called the Beast. But this one offers a refreshing reprieve from that trope, and our beast is quite un-beastlike, which I enjoyed. Click here for my full review.

3. Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer

cress

This entire series is wonderful for people who enjoy fairytale retellings, but Cress was my favorite in the series, Scarlet being a close second. Full review right here.

4. The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson #1) by Rick Riordan

the lightning thief

I feel this is sort of cheating, but Greek mythology HAS kind of been reimagined in this series. Oops.

Want to read:

5. Splintered (Splintered #1) by A.G. Howard

splintered

Reimagining of Alice in Wonderland.

6. Wicked by Gregory Maguire

wicked

Reimagining of The Wizard of Oz.

7. Cruel Beauty (Cruel Beauty #1) by Rosamund Hodge

15839984

Reimagining of the Beauty & the Beast.

8. The Child Thief by Brom

6308379

Reimagining of Peter Pan. I really, really want to read this one because I’m pretty sure Peter Pan is portrayed as a villain/morally ambiguous character.

Okay, that’s all I could come up with for this week’s topic. Although I love reading retellings, I haven’t actually read many at all, nor do I know of many. If you have any recommendations, feel free to leave them down in the comments below. Happy reading, everyone! 🙂

  • Wonderful picks for this week’s TTT! I also really loved ACOTAR and I really want to read The Lunar Chronicles, Cruel Beauty, and THE CHILD THEIF. I have never heard of that but just through looking at the cover and your little description has me hooked to want to read it! xoxo

    • Thank you! Yes, the Child Thief seems so interesting. The first time I heard what it was about, I was like, “yep, i’m in” haha 🙂

  • Great list! I had such a hard time with this one because I haven’t read 10 fairytale retelling yet. But I’m glad the Lunar Chronicles made it to your list! Splintered was also a good trilogy. The way the world is described was fantastic!

    • Thanks so much! I’ve heard amazing things about the Splintered trilogy, so I’m super excited to get into it! 🙂

  • Love your picks!
    ACOTAR was so good!
I am excited to read The Wrath and the Dawn this month!
I really want to read Splintered, Cruel Beauty, and the Child Thief; I have those on my TBR.

    • Glad you liked ACoTaR! Can’t wait for its sequel. And I sincerely hope you enjoy the Wrath and the Dawn as much as I did. I feel like I’ve been talking about that book non-stop since I read it, haha.

      • I can’t wait for the sequel too. I want it now, lol!
I’ve been talking about the I Hunt Killers series in like every other post, so it’s okay haha. The Wrath and the Dawn sounds amazing though, so I am really hoping I love it!

  • Cruel Beauty is an amazing book, I definitely think you should look into it!! I absolutely loved it. The Wrath and the Dawn and A Court of Thorns and Roses are two of my favorite books from this year for sure. Thanks for sharing!
    My TTT

    • I’ve heard mixed things about Cruel Beauty, but ever since reading ACoTaR, I’ve been curious to read it because I’ve heard it’s a better retelling than ACoTaR. :O

  • I’m starting Cress soon!

  • Great list! Splintered and Wicked made mine. I wasn’t sure on Percy Jackson so I left it off. But then again, I had Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan retellings on my list, and those are probably more “classics” than “fairy tale.” Oh well. It was tough to think of 10!

    • Yes, I twisted the topic and made it more of a popular tale reimagining instead of strict fairytale retellings. 🙂

      • I think if you didn’t it would be impossible to hit 10! At least for me it would. 🙂

  • I need to read Wrath & the Dawn after seeing so many people recommend it today! My TTT list

  • What a great list! I haven’t read that many retellings yet, but The Lunar Chronicles are so good indeed!
Wicked is also great. I’ve yet to read the rest of the series, but the first one was so good! A bit of a heavy book though – politics, psychology, .. But worth it. The Child Thief is pretty nice. Not my favourite, but if you like dark and twisted you can’t go wrong there.
Have you tried Juliet Marillier? She’s wonderful with retellings 🙂

  • aentee @ read at midnight

Nice to see The Child Thief on your list as well, I hope we will both enjoy it 😀 Splintered is also on my TBR because of how many people seemed to adore it!

  • Great list! Child Thief looks super interesting! Especially when you’re writing a thing about an evil Peter Pan yourself 😉

    -xxx-

  • Great picks! The Lightning Thief! I have wanted to read that one for so long even after two movie releases and loving those, I haven’t gotten to it and forgot to put it in my list. Here’s my TTT
