Book Tag | Mid-Year Book Freakout

mid year freakout tag

Okay, I know I’m a little late in doing this tag (it should’ve been done in July or August, ideally, but what are you going to do?). This is basically a book tag where you freak out about the books you’ve read this year, and I’ve been wanting to do this ever since I saw it on YouTube. I was tagged by Erika @ Erika in Bookventureland! I haven’t seen this around the blogosphere too much, so I’m hoping to tag a bunch of people who haven’t yet done this already. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. What is the best book you have read so far in 2015?

monsters of men

You would think that I had a tough time answering this, but I really didn’t. As soon as I read the question, I knew this book would be my answer. I hadn’t put a book in my ‘favorites’ shelf for a very long time, but this one crept into it with the turn of the last page. It made me weep and want to tear my hair out. But I loved every second of it, and I would recommend this series to anyone and everyone.

2. What is the best sequel you’ve read so far in 2015?

com

This was a phenomenal sequel Throne of Glass. It was delicious; I read it in a day or two. I loved the characters, the story was fantastic, it was written well with amazing action, on-point world-building, some great plot twists and wonderful character development. Unfortunately, I think this is where the series peaked- the other two books I didn’t enjoy nearly as much as this one.

3. What is a new release you haven’t yet read, but want to?

lairofdreams

I read the Diviners (the first book in this series) last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was definitely one of my favorite books of 2014, and I am positive that this installment is going to be just as fantastic. I own the book on my iBooks but I just haven’t gotten around to reading it yet, since I’m in a reading slump. But hopefully, I’ll get around to reading it soon.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of 2015?

coe

Hands down. This series is brilliant. I feel like this series doesn’t get the love it deserves on the blogosphere. The protagonists are some of the most well-rounded, lovable, flawed people I’ve read about. The mysteries are intriguing and the culprits unpredictable. And J.K. Rowling does have a way with words, so you should really read it.

5. Which book was the biggest disappointment?

queen of shadows

Just… so much nope.

6. Which book was the biggest surprise?

one of the guys

I’m not a huge contemporary person, and I very rarely pick up contemporaries if they’re not talked about much. I received an arc for this on NetGalley, and I absolutely adored it. It was just what I need at the time; it was light and fluffy and wonderful. The characters were very realistic. The main character undergoes a lot of development and comes to accept who she is as well as the people around her. This was just a top-notch vanilla contemporary book.

7. Who is your favorite new author?

Patrick Ness, no contest. (That rhymes, wow I suck)

8. Who is your newest fictional crush?

Okay, this might sound super weird but I don’t get crushes on fictional characters a lot. Yes, I might like a male character a lot, but do I want to take him out of the book and make him mine and keep him safe forever and ever and ever while wrapping him up in blankets and feeding him pizza and chocolate cake? That doesn’t happen much, BUT IT HAPPENED THIS YEAR. CHAOL BABY I LOVE YOU FOREVER precious cinnamon roll. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Chaol Westfall is arguably one of the greatest characters in the Throne of Glass series. He’s the most complex and the most FLAWED character. He had potential for the best character development (and this potential was stamped over by Sarah J Maas and Rowan Whitethorn in Queen of Shadows, but let’s not talk about that.) He’s precious with his unwavering loyalty, his stupid obsession with duty and honor, and his complete devotion to his best friend. UGH, I’m going to stop because CHAOL. (bby you deserved so much more *sobs*)

9. Who is your newest favorite character?

twc

For this, I’d have to pick Kestrel Trajan from the Winner’s Curse trilogy. I really liked her in the first book, but my appreciation was taken to a whole new level in the second book. In a world of wannabe Katnisses, Kestrel holds her own as the super feminine (looks pretty, puts up her hair nicely, has gorgeous dresses) but bad-ass female character. I love how she’s not the most physically adept character out there, but she uses her wit and cleverness to outsmart everyone around her. Love her so, so much.

10. Pick a book that made you cry.

cprincess

Gosh, I cried a lot. I know a lot of people wept towards the end, but I cried in the middle. Will and Jem’s bromance will be the death of me.

11. Pick a book that made you happy.

all the boys

Lovely, sweet, diverse, relatable and DIFFERENT.

12. Favorite book to movie adaptation you saw this year?

I haven’t seen any this year. 🙁 I saw the Duff, which I thought was great but I haven’t read the book so…

13. Favorite blog post you’ve written this year?

I don’t really have a favorite. I’m just very proud of myself for starting a blog (which took off in January 2015) and actually sticking with it. I’m notorious for not carrying on with the things I start, so I’m really glad that I stuck around for this.

14. Most beautiful book you bought so far this year?

trbtdtbllb

This entire series. I have them all in hardcover, and they are the most beautiful things on my shelf right now. Their spines look so wonderful together. This series is also just a brilliant series, and I was looking for an excuse to put it in this tag, AND I GOT A VALID REASON TO DO SO, aha!

Check out my reviews for: The Raven Boys, The Dream Thieves, Blue Lily, Lily Blue

15. What books do you NEED to read by the end of this year?

I would really love to finish some of the series I’ve started:

~ Dreams of Gods and Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone) by Laini Taylor

~ The last four books of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

~ The last two books of the Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima

~ Heart of Betrayal (Kiss of Deception #2) by Mary E. Pearson

~ Lair of Dreams (The Diviners #2) by Libba Bray

tag~ Cat @ Cat’s Shelf

~ Valerie @ Little Dutch Bookshop

  1. YAAAAS to Patrick Ness! I adore him and his novels. I have only read the first book in the Chaos Walking trilogy but the second is well on its way to me right now.
    Great choices!

  2. YESSSS to Monsters of Men! One of my favourite finale of all time. Patrick Ness is an absolute inspiration. Sorry to hear that you didn’t like Queen of Shadows, I actually love the direction the books are taking – but I know that it alienates a lot of fans of ToG & CoM like yourself.

    • Yes, I feel like for the Throne of Glass series, there are two very distinct camps: the people who prefer ToG and CoM, and those who prefer HoF and QoS. xD Sadly, I’m part of the former.

    • WHAT. *puts on glasses* Oh, yes, I see. I’ll fix that in my post right now. Belated thank you for tagging me! LOL xD

Yes yes yes. Patrick Ness is brilliant! You must read something by him! 😀 <3
